Series of Free Saturday Workshops Starts July 18
Community members can learn how to “live green” in a series of free multi-media presentations at Orange Coast College on Saturdays from July 18th through August 8th.
Topics include practical ways to help the environment at home, solar careers and opportunities, resource-efficient landscaping, and solar for homeowners.
“People are deluged with the concept of going green, but they don’t know where to start,” said Candace Moore, project coordinator for a $500,000 two-year grant awarded to OCC last year to help launch the college’s solar installation program. Part of the funding is allocated to community awareness, including the workshop series that will be held on the Costa Mesa campus in the college’s Student Center Lounge.
“Going Green – Every Home an Eco-Home” will launch the four-week series on Saturday, July 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The program will offer a practical approach to everyday ways to conserve resources and live in more eco-friendly manner.
Presented by the producers of Public Broadcasting System (PBS) award-winning program, “Going Green,” the workshop will suggest fun and creative ways to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.
On Saturday, July 25th, a free presentation will explore “Solar Careers and Opportunities,” presented by Liz Merry of Verve Solar Consulting, an environmental consulting firm that works to accelerate the use of solar technology. The program will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“Resource Efficient Landscaping” will explore local landscape resource centers, sustainable landscape projects, and the evolution of sustainable landscapes in Southern California. Well-known landscape architect and arborist Guy Stivers will lead the workshop on Saturday, Aug. 1st, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Stivers has been instrumental in developing resource-efficient landscape projects including the “ocean friendly” demonstration garden at Santiago Community College, Huntington Beach’s Shipley Nature Center, and the master plan for Bolsa Chica Land Trust’s “CPR for the Mesa” restoration project adjacent to the wetlands.
“Solar for the Homeowner” wraps up the series on Saturday, Aug. 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The program, led by Roy Heine of Suntrek Industries, will look at ways solar energy can be used in the home to generate electricity, heat water or warm a swimming pool. Topics also include tax incentives, rebates and financing options.
Register for one or more of the “living green” workshops by calling (714) 432-5628. Admission is free.
